Betsy Moore enjoys a lifelong love affair with color, line and design. As far back as she recalls, she has felt closely connected with the visual world. Her artistic mother recognized her gifts early on and encouraged her to paint. At Mary Baldwin College (University), she explored her drawing and painting, resulting in a double major in Fine Art and English. After college, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts to pursue an additional degree in Interior Design. Eager to expand her artistic education upon graduation from VCU, Moore attended The Parsons School of Design/The New School in Rome, Florence and Venice, Italy. In Italy, she focused on all aspects of design and architecture, including architectural rendering and perspective drawing, tools that served her well in her design business. During the last 30 years, Moore built a successful interior design business, oftentimes purchasing art for her clients' projects.
Moore believes art to be personal and subjective. Her influences include the world around her as found in nature, interiors or abstract color and pattern association in everyday life. Oil painting is her favorite medium and she prefers a looser brush style and paints to bring light and expression into her art. For this reason, she is attracted to Impressionists Mary Cassatt and Paul Cezanne. Other influences include Edward Hopper, Joaquin Sorolla and John Singer Sargent.
Moore currently enjoys painting en plein air with a group weekly and painting daily in her studio or abroad, wherever she can take her palette, paints and easel…. Most recently in Southern France Summer of 2025 during Lavender season and on the Maine Coast in Summer of 2026. In Richmond, she has studied with artists Robin Caspari, as well as taken classes with Jane Joyner and David Tanner. Workshops include study with landscape artists John Poon, Anne Blair Brown, Dee Beard Dean, Maggie Siner, Larry Moore, Andre Lucero, Patrick Saunders, Ken Elliott and she has traveled to Coastal Maine for workshops with Lori Putnam, Colin Page, and Colley Whisson. More recent workshops include Joe Gyurcsak, Derek Penix and attending a Quang Ho with Adrienne Stein workshop in Scotland in the Summer of 2022.
Moore has shown her work at Crossroads Art Center, Shore Dog, Bella Arte Gallery, North First Gallery and St. Christopher’s School Art Center Gallery in Richmond. She was the featured artist and curator at Louisa Arts Center and also The Gallery at Rosemont Winery. She was featured in a joint show at The Cabell Gallery in Lexington, VA. Betsy Moore’s work has also been shown at Provisions at Fine Creek in Powhatan. Moore recently received an Honorable Mention for art Shown at the 2026 Tuckahoe Women’s Club in Richmond.
